A strategic plan for your website is essential. How will your target audience find you? Once found, how can we best capture their interest, and encourage them to learn more? Does your site offer a compelling and persuasive sales theme throughout? This planning should be done without consideration of the site's appearance the goal is to develop the most effective function of the site, and let the form follow. Keep it simple, especially on the home page...
Too many sites (especially new ones) get caught up in animations, sounds, and special effects that have no relevance to their business. If those things relate to your product or service, they belong. If not, focus on clearly providing the key information to your customer in the shortest time and easiest fashion.
Studies show that most people will only wait 8-10 seconds for a web page to load content is what they look for first. Visitors most often look at headlines, first paragraphs, section labels, and subheads before looking at images! Fancy effects slow loading and may drive potential customers from your site. This is especially true of home pages; once we have a visitor's interest, other pages that take longer to load are generally tolerable.

Develop a "personality" for your site to bring visitors back...
Your website should be designed for your target audience, and generally reflect other marketing materials. Consider the use of humor, relevant technical resource information, newsletters, or similar additions to encourage people to revisit your site often. Consider adding an opt-in mailing list for visitors willing to accept news items via e-mail.
Keep your site dynamic...

The greatest feature of a web site is the ability to make instant changes to remain current and topical. Sites that are continually updated encourage people to come back regularly, and also are generally favored by search engines. A site that never changes, or was "last updated" months or years ago, will not succeed.
Review yourself often...
Track results, monitor your position in search engines, and consider your web site an ongoing marketing program rather than a one time project.
